Transports - the best ways to explore the city!

Moving around in the city of Barcelona can be quite difficult and confusing at the beginning, especially if you come from a small town (like me!).

Let's see together which are the different ways to travel in the city, and which are the best ones for your needs!

METRO

The subway system of Barcelona is the easiest way to travel around the city. It extends for 146km and consists of 12 lines. You can buy tickets at the vending machines, which you can find in each station.

Note that except for the one way ticket, all the others are integrated. It means that you can validate them on other forms of transport within 1 hour and 15 minutes from the first validation, without being charged again.

Below, the different solutions offered to travel in the metropolitan area of Barcelona (ZONA 1, prices 2018).

Senzill: the single ticket, costs 2,20 euros and it does not include the way from/to the airport, which costs other 4,60 euros/way
Hola Barcelona (2,3,4,5 days): the best solution for who is coming for Barcelona for a few days to visit the city. It includes unlimited rides  on the metro, buses and trams and it does include the way from and to the airport.
2 days: 15 euros
3 days: 22 euros
4 days: 28.50 euros
5 days: 35 euros

T-10: it includes 10 rides. It costs 10.20 euros and it does not include the way from/to the airport.
T-50: it includes 50 rides. It costs 43.50 euros and it does not include the way from/to the airport.
T-mes: for the cost of 54 euros you have unlimited travels by metro, train, and tram, including the ways from/to the airport. The most convenient solution for who is planning to stay in the city longer than a few days.

Opening time: from Monday to Thursday 5.00 am to 00.00 am - Friday from 5.00 am to 2.00 am - Saturday 24h - Sunday from 5.00 am to 2.00 am

BUS

The Barcelona's bus network is extensive and it is always being developed. For the most recent updates you can check the TMB site, where you can find a map with all the bus routes around the city. The bus tickets and their prices are exactly the same as the metro ones, because they are both part of the Barcelona Integrated System.
In my opinion, it is one of the best ways to get to know the city, since you can enjoy the sights around you, while you are travelling to reach your next destination.

Opening hours and timetables:
They do not have a fixed timetable, because each route has its own schedule (you better check TMB's site for further information), but they approximately run from 6.00 am to 11.00 pm.
At night, you can find the Nitbuses, easy to recognise because their number is prefixed by the letter N.

TRAM

As you can see from the TMB map above, the tram network (the green lines prefixed by a T) does not serve all the zones of the city. It owns 6 lines which connect approximately the north eastern side of the metropolitan area of Barcelona to the city center, and on the other side, it connects the city center to the south western side.
Combined with other forms of transport, it can be useful to reach specific areas of the city, which the metro or the bus does not reach.

Timetables: from Monday to Thursday 5.00 am to 00.00 am - Friday and Saturday 5.00 am to 2.00 am - Sunday 5.00 am - 00.00 am
